Type of tables & centerpieces at wedding reception?

Lighting for outdoor evening reception

I am having an outdoor reception in September at a historical garden. Since the reception starts at 8pm, it will get dark outside fairly quickly. What are some ideas to lighten up the tables and/or walk ways. Could I simply place several candles on the tables or would I need more light?

Do we need to have assigned seating at reception tables?

We would like to have long tables at our reception rather than rounds, but I am having a problem with the table cards for the guests.
