History of Bridal Shower Planning
In times gone by bridal showers were used to ensure that the bride was well prepared for married life. In fact, the idea of the traditional bridal shower originated in Holland. If a Dutch bride was unfortunate enough to have her father disapprove of her choice in husbands, he would not offer a dowry (Money or property brought by a bride to her husband at marriage). Her friends would then shower her with gifts so she could still marry her man, without the help of her father's money.

The Purpose of Wedding Showers Today
In these modern days, with more young women waiting until later in life to be married, the reason for hosting a wedding shower has certainly changed. Not many brides have a need for gifts to set up a home since many are already living on their own. So, the shower has now become more of a chance for the wedding guests to spend some time with the bride and to feel like a part of the wedding planning process. The party should be an intimate gathering of the bride's "nearest and dearest". This should not be a mini-reception. Not every woman from the guest list needs to be invited. This is why many etiquette experts and consultants suggest that the shower be small enough so that the bride gets to socialize with all of her guests individually.

To Surprise or Not to Surprise?

Sometimes surprise bridal showers are planned for the bride-to-be. This might sound like a fun idea, but it could be tricky to plan, since the bride-to-be may need to be consulted on the guest list. It is also possible that more than one shower is planned. Perhaps the bridal party is planning one shower and the bride's business associates are planning another. Only the bride will be able to coordinate the dates of both events. We advise against making this event a surprise unless you are sure of the following:

  • The bride-to-be will not be disappointed that she has not been informed beforehand.
  • You are confident that your guest list includes everyone the bride-to-be would have invited, if consulted.
  • The bride will not schedule another event on the planned date

There shouldn't be more than two showers, excluding the workplace shower. But, if there is to be more than one shower, and some guests such as attendants and family are to be invited to more than one shower, they do not need to purchase more than one gift. They should try to attend all showers, though. Guests receiving two bridal shower invitations are faced with the moral dilemma of whether they should give two gifts. The answer is no. An understanding bride-to-be will make it known to the guest that she will also announce during the gift opening activity at the second shower that she has already received a beautiful shower gift (describe the gift) from that guest.

If the guest has not been given this hint ahead of time, a solution would be for the guest to give a small gift for the second shower. It is a good idea to connect the second gift with the first gift. Examples:

Bridal Shower Gift Ideas

  1. You gave a cake plate and server at the first shower. For the second shower, gather some spatulas and other utensils at the local dollar store, wrap them prettily and include a note in the package saying "The cake plate was for the end product - here are the utensils you will need to bake the cake!"
  2. If the bride is registered for dinnerware, you can split up the gift. Give the sugar dish at one shower with a note saying "more to come", then give the creamer at the second shower.
  3. Give a set of towels for the first gift. Wrap a pretty package of guest towels for the second shower with a note saying "My first gift was for you, this gift is for the many guests who will be welcomed into your new home.

Ideas for Scheduling the Wedding Shower
It is best to schedule a bridal shower about two months before the wedding, when the excitement is mounting in anticipation of the wedding day. A bridal shower should not be scheduled less than a month before the wedding date because the bride-to-be is typically consumed with last minute details as her wedding date approaches. Be sure to check with the bride to make sure that the scheduled date fits in with her plans.

Bridal Shower Etiquette

Most sources agree that the tradition of wedding showers began in Holland where a young Dutch girl fell in love with a poor miller. The miller was poor because he shared much of what he had with the community. When the two married despite her father’s wishes, he withheld her dowry. The community responded by “showering” the bride with the necessities needed to set up a home. This was repeated by others and became a tradition, which eventually led to the end of the dowry system.

Today, we shower the couple with gifts for their new life together.

  • Although it is becoming more commonplace, for most cultures here in the US it is considered impolite for close family members (mom and sis) to host a bridal shower.
    • A sister or relative may host if she is a member of the bridal party.
  • Never host a shower for yourself.
  • The shower shouldn’t resemble a reception, so keep the guest list to a minimum.
  • Typically the mother of the bride and honor attendant (often the bridesmaids) will attend all showers, but do not have to give a gift for each one.
  • Only invite those whom are invited to the wedding.
    • Exception: the office shower.
  • Multiple and co-ed parties are appropriate.
  • It is never polite to invite the same guest to more than one shower.
  • Showers are usually informal, but the sky is the limit.
  • It can be held anywhere, a home, restaurant, and hotel…
  • Any time is fine, however the afternoon is still the most popular.
  • It could be a lunch, brunch, barbecue, pool party, cocktail party, co-ed or no.
  • It can sometimes be a surprise.
  • Remarrying brides can have showers hosted for them.

Note: Do not use any of the gifts until after the wedding.

The gift-less shower is becoming more fashionable due to blended families and brides not needing the ‘extra’ help setting up the household.

Note: Traditionally, bridal showers are scheduled at least two weeks before the ceremony. However, with the long distance bride, the shower will have to be scheduled when she is in town for a fitting or for some other reason. This really couldn’t be a surprise, plus it may have to be scheduled days before the ceremony.Note: Traditionally, one of the bridesmaids will create a practice bouquet for the bride to use for the rehearsal made with the bows from her shower presents. Another will keep track of all of the names and gifts of the gift givers for thank you notes.

Bridal Shower Invitations
Mail three to four weeks before the event and include the following information:

  • Name of the bride-to-be.
  • Date of the Shower.
  • Time of the Shower, e.g. 2 PM - 5 PM. (It is best to put both the beginning and end times on the invitation so that the guests can plan their day.)
  • Address where the shower is being held.
  • Name and phone number of the hostess/hostesses.
  • A deadline date for the RSVP. (This is usually about two weeks prior to the shower date.)
  • Bridal Shower theme. (If applicable).
  • Home decorating colors. (If applicable).
  • It is helpful to enclose a map of the shower location.

Personalized Save the Date Magnets can be tucked inside the invitation.

  2. When all the guests have arrived, the hostess has each guest introduce herself and explain her relationship to the bride-to-be.
  3. Icebreakers: These can be shower games or other activities that help your guests interact.
  4. Food is served. This can be appetizers, a buffet or a sit-down lunch, tea or dinner depending on time of day.
  5. Toast to the bride-to-be.
  6. The bride-to-be opens her gifts and then the gifts are passed around for the guests to admire.
  7. The bride thanks the hostess for giving the shower and thanks the guests for celebrating with her.
  8. Time for individual conversations and socialization.
  9. Bridal shower favors are given to guests. (If they have not been provided at a place setting.)
  10. Hostess thanks the guests for coming - individually, if possible.

Bridal Shower Menu Ideas - When Hosted in a Private Home

  • Appetizers - vegetables and dip, fruit tray, potato chips, nuts, etc.
  • The meal - salad and a casserole works well. Select a menu that can be prepared ahead of time, because you don't want to be busy in the kitchen when you could be mingling with your guests.
  • For vegetarians - If some of your guests are vegetarians, include a meatless dish such as a bean casserole, etc. If you plan to serve a chicken or shrimp salad, put aside some of the salad in a separate bowl before adding the chicken or shrimp.
  • Drinks - coffee, tea, soft drinks and/or punch. Mimosa (orange juice with champagne) is good for a brunch. This can be used to toast the bride. If you don't want to serve liquor, there are many good non-alcoholic champagne choices available now.
  • Dessert - specially decorated cake, pie.
  • Sunday Brunch Shower: Bagels, fresh seasonal fruit, mini danish, scones, breakfast quiche, fresh squeezed OJ, bloody mary's, mimosas

Atmosphere Builders for a Shower at Home

  • Have some music playing in the background to set the mood. See that the music is low so that it will not drown out the conversation. Choosing a CD of wedding music will set the tone and provide a talking point. A CD of wedding music is also a good gift for the bride, if she has not yet finalized the music to be played at her wedding.
  • Decorating with banners and balloons can quickly give a room a festive air.
  • Flower centerpieces always add charm to the food table. Consider purchasing the new "edible arrangements" that are fruit based cut out to resemble flowers...really cool and useful too!
  • Use white napkins pushed through heart-shaped cookie cutters as a napkin ring.
  • Make a faux wedding cake or a bridal shower towel cake for a centerpiece.

This fake wedding cake is composed of 4 bath towels, 4 hand towels, and 4 washcloths. These should be new and will be given to the bride after the shower. Start by folding the bath towels in fourths lengthwise. Connect the folded towels end to end with large safety pins. Start at one end and roll the towels up. When you reach the end, secure the end with pins. Follow the same procedure for the hand towels and then again for the washcloths. Stack the three rolls with the bath towels on the bottom, the hand towels in the middle, and the washcloths on top. Secure the layers together with pins. Use creativity to decorate. Ideas include silk flowers, strands of beads, pearls and/or jewels which can be purchased at local craft stores.

Schedule for a Bridal Shower at a Restaurant

  1. Hostess places shower favors and place cards at each place setting.
  2. Guests arrive and are introduced to each other.
  3. Guests are seated and the meal is served.
  4. Toast to the bride-to-be.
  5. Bride opens her gifts.
  6. Bride thanks hostess for giving the shower, thanks guests for celebrating with her.
  7. Hostess thanks the guests for coming.

Bridal Shower Favor Ideas

While a tradition in some communities, favors are unknown in others. Here are some bridal shower favor ideas, should you decide to include them:

Wedding Shower Favor Ideas

Give each guest a homemade cinnamon roll wrapped in decorative cellophane and tied with colorful ribbon -- homemade sugar cookies (bell or heart shapes) decorated with icing or colored sugar. Coordinate the favor along with a theme, if applicable.

Bath oil beads, small flower or heart shaped soaps wrapped in tulle and tied with ribbon.

Take a block of colored candle wax and melt down using a double burner. Add potpourri and mix well. Pour into a heart-shaped mold mold and place an 8 - 10 inch piece of thin ribbon near top of heart before wax starts to dry. Remove hearts from molds and tie ribbon at top to create a beautifully scented ornament that can be placed around your door handle or on a Christmas tree.

Make your own wine charms (the type used to distinguish which glass of wine belongs to you). Purchase small silver or gold loops that close at the top from a craft or jewelry supply store, along with different colored beads and little charms of various types. Assemble each charm so that it is different from the other, so that guests will remember which drink is theirs. You can also make your guests their own set of 4 - 6 charms or purchase them already made for about $20 per set.

Make your own gel candles. Buy gel and materials from a craft shop, pour gel into small votives, martini, wine or champagnes glasses (do not use plastic) and add sand and sea shells or other small decorative items that are not flammable. Add a personalized favor tag or use as a table decoration. Gel candles burn a lot longer and there is no messy wax to ruin table cloths.

Other popular favors still include wedding bubbles and wedding bell favors, placecards frames, the pewter placecard holder chairs are a favorite and now they have come out with placecard holder shoes, sofas and even little cars. Other useful items include bottle openers, the new "perfect pair" pear-shaped silver salt and pepper shakers, mini wedding cake candles ...also the silver ice cream scoops

Free Bridal Shower Game Ideas: Wedding Shower Games

Wedding shower games get everyone involved. However, if the guests are diverse in age and interests, it is important to choose themes that all guests can relate to, such as cooking or travel. If the games break the guests into small groups, you will encourage laughter and interaction. Creating a recipe/photo/memorabilia album at the shower for the bride is a great way to get all the guests occupied - and the bride-to-be receives a unique memory album. Recipe Legacy features a recipe / photo CD with artwork, games and detailed instructions on how to do this.

A fun shower game that allows your guests to become familiar with the groom as well as the bride, is the “How Well Do You Know The Bride” game. This will require some work on your part but it is worth the time! Here’s how you play: Before the day of the shower, ask the groom several questions about the bride. For example, “What is her favorite flower?” or “What is her dream date?” Videotape his answers to each of the questions. At the shower, ask the same series of questions to the guests and have them write down their answers. After all the questions have been answered, ask each one to the bride and have her give her answer. Next play the videotape of her fiancée's answers – just for fun. The one that gets the most answers right wins! Not only is this a fun way to include the groom, you learn more about the guest of honor!

Bridal Shower Gift Unwrapping Game - makes the gift opening a bit more exciting for the guests.

You will need:

  • A prominent chair for the bride-to-be.
  • A writing pad and pen for the gift list.
  • A sturdy paper plate and a scissors for the shower bouquet.
  • A plastic bag for quick disposal of the discarded wrapping paper.

Helper assignments:

Helper A: Write down a description of each gift and the name of the giver.
Helper B: Create the shower bouquet - traditionally accomplished by taking the bows and ribbon from the wrappings and threading them through a paper plate.
Helper C: Pass around each gift for all to examine.
Helper D: Repackage each gift (with each gift card inserted in the correct gift box - this will make thank-you notes an easier task!)
Helper E: Collect the discarded wrap and stuff in a garbage bag.

Be sure to have a camera handy to take plenty of photos.

Ideas for Bridal Shower Themes (Remember - the gift suggestions are just that, suggestions. We cannot, should not insist guests bring any particular type of gift. All gifts should be welcomed and appreciated)

  • Make "Room" for Bridal Showers
Come up with a list os rooms in the couples new home and ask guests to bring a gift suited to furnishing that particular room.
  • Oooh-La-Lingerie
This one can be as tame, or as racy as you like, depending on the guest list. Guests will bring gifts of wedding lingerie which can include penoir sets, comfy jammies, garters and more.
  • Time for Shower!
Come up with special "times" like movie time, dinner time, etc and ask guests to use their imagination to think up gifts which will fit into this theme.
  • The Pampered Bride
Guests buy gifts associated with helping the bride to care for her personal needs. This can include health spa or nail salon gift certificates (although, you should really bring along something the bride can open so include a manicure set, etc with a certificate), yoga instruction or bath incidentals. Actually hosting the shower at a spa or hair salon is a really fun idea. There are plenty of places that specialize in hosting showers. What is more enjoyable than to spend a day at a spa with a group of your best girls?
  • Garden Party
Know a bride who has a love for gardening? Host a shower in a garden setting and decorate tables with beautiful flowers. Ask guests to bring along gifts that the bride can use in her garden.
  • Belly Up to the Bar
Guests bring gifts of wine or other types of favorite drinks, glasses, drink mixes, etc. to help the couple stock their bar.
  • Christmas Theme
Ask your guests to help the couple fill in their first Christmas tree by bringing gifts of Christmas ornaments. These could be fun or sentimental, handmade or store bought. The couple will remember each guest every year as they trim their tree. Makes a great theme for a shower for a winter wedding.
  • Old fashioned Pajama Party
Good clean fun! Ask guests to dress in their favorite jammies. Have tons of super-bad-for-you snacks, chick flicks, board games, etc.
  • Recipes Galore
For the bride who loves to cook - or hasn't got a clue! Guest write their favorite recipe and bring the card along with all non-perishable ingredients for the recipe wrapped in anything festive
