Hit the bridal boards and especially regional sections to\u00a0chat up brides-in-the-know. They\u2019ll find you some breathtaking spots you might not otherwise track down.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subtitle\">Wedding Invitations<\/h2>\n<p>Start with a quality\u00a0parchment. Adorn with pressed flowers, or roll into scrolls. Seal\u00a0envelopes with wax. Experiment with the wax: you can embed objects\u00a0in the seal, such as small pressed flowers or ribbons. You can also\u00a0use \u201cresist\u201d techniques and gold powders to create something\u00a0truly unique. Enclose an ancient-looking map you drew of the venue.<\/p>\n<h2>Fairytale Flowers<\/h2>\n<p>A quck google search should turn up\u00a0instructions on making the traditional cascading wedding bouquet. Consider adorning your bouquet with crystals and big, showy peacock feathers. You could also simply tie up an attractive bundle of herbs \u2013 say, lavender and rosemary \u2013 in silk ribbon for an authentic and elegant bouquet. Add a few springs of wildflowers. Use herbs like rosemary and sage tied up smaller silk ribbon for the men\u2019s boutonni\u00e8res. You can even make a spectacular \u201cbead bouquet\u201d made entirely from beads and wires, if you\u2019re patient.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subtitle\">Wedding Cake Fit For a Courtier<\/h2>\n<p>The choice is yours, but spice cakes, carrot\u00a0cakes or fruitcakes all have plenty of medieval overtones. The most traditional\u00a0medieval wedding cake of all is somewhat surprising:\u00a0sweet buns heaped in a large pile between the wedding couple, who\u00a0were encouraged to try to kiss over the pile in hopes of a fertile<br \/>\nmarriage. You can something surprisingly similar with a Krispy Kreme\u00a0cake!<\/p>\n<p>But if you\u2019re going with a <em>cake<\/em> cake, we\u2019ve found some\u00a0lovely medieval or renaissance cake toppers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li2\">Dragon Heart cake topper, pewter\u00a0or crystal<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\">Fairy\u00a0Heart Cake Topper<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\">Merlin\u00a0cake topper<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\">King\u00a0Arthur cake topper<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"subtitle\">Decking the Halls<\/h2>\n<p>You\u2019ll want heavy\u00a0pewter goblets for the bridal couple. Carry the theme by collecting\u00a0as many pewter cake stands as you can find from thrift stores and\u00a0piling everything you can on them. Medieval times were all about\u00a0finger foods. After Christmas, stock up on the beautiful brocade table runners\u00a0with quilting, silk braid and tassels that can be had for a song in January. Place gorgeous iron candle screens behind the bridal couple and in front of the fireplace.<\/p>\n<p>For\u00a0centerpieces, fill tall, clear vases with dried\u00a0curly willow. Hot-glue crystal beads to the end of each twig.\u00a0Place votives in a circle underneath each centerpiece to amplify\u00a0and scatter the light. If the wedding is outside, hang Moroccan wedding lanterns from the trees and posts. If indoors, hang the lanterns or as an alternative, candle chandeliers from the ceiling. Add to the forest magic of an indoor wedding by renting potted trees or buying your own to plant later.<\/p>\n<p>If open flame is verboten at your wedding venue, you can still\u00a0have the effect of flickering candles \u2013 thanks to battery-operated\u00a0tea lights.<\/p>\n<p>Call your local prop shop or drama program to see if you can rent\u00a0big-ticket items that can really make your reception pop: thrones\u00a0for the head table, for example, or full suits of armor to guard\u00a0the entrance. They might be able to connect you to local performers,\u00a0too \u2013 fire-eaters, heralds or jugglers, for example.<\/p>\n<p>Use humble muslin or cotton duck for chair covers, and consider\u00a0draping the wall in crenellated fabric (you know \u2013 cut and\u00a0hemmed like the turrets in a storybook castle). Decorating with Coats of Arms, Banners and\u00a0<span class=\"bold-it\">Pennants. <\/span>If you\u2019re lucky, one of you already has a Coat of Arms, or a last name similar to someone who does. You can check family names, and download make-your-own heraldry software.<\/p>\n<section class=\"entry-content clearfix\">Once you have a herald, it\u2019s not too difficult to translate\u00a0it into a beautiful banner. Buy muslin that\u2019s thin enough\u00a0to be a little translucent, and blow up your herald to desired\u00a0size using a copy machine or printer. Trace the outline onto your\u00a0muslin, and paint in with acrylic paints and fabric pens. The results\u00a0will wow you. If you like the effect of personalized banners, you can also adorn them with the wedding couple\u2019s last initials.Also, try Celtic stencils or rubber stamps to paint or stamp impressive\u00a0designs on your napkins or tablecloths.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subtitle\">Medieval Music<\/h2>\n<p>A harpist or a vocalist and lute are bound to charm your guests. Also, try your local SCA organization or Renaissance Faire to find mandoline-ready musicians.
