While the state sets the legal\u00a0requirements for the wedding, a church sets additional standards\u00a0and requirements for the marriage to be recognized as sacred. In Catholicism, marriage constitutes one of the sacraments of\u00a0faith. Consequently, the Catholic Church has its own nonnegotiable requirements for a marriage that\u2019s recognized in the eyes of the\u00a0church.<\/p>\n<h2>Venue Constrictions<\/h2>\n<p>Interestingly enough, location constitutes\u00a0one of the most important elements of the Catholic wedding.\u00a0Although outdoor weddings are increasingly popular, they simply\u00a0can\u2019t be recognized by the Catholic Church. The reason is, Catholicism\u00a0holds that the purpose of the wedding ceremony is to seek God\u2019s\u00a0blessing and presence in your marriage, and to do that, the wedding\u00a0must take place within sacred walls. It\u2019s easy to see how Catholicism\u00a0would have drawn a clear line between Catholic weddings and more\u00a0pagan affairs long ago, using these guidelines. A union\u00a0performed in a church by Catholic priest, whether or not it features\u00a0a full Mass, will still be completely recognized. Still, many couples\u00a0opt for the full Mass, both for the additional blessings received\u00a0during the ceremony, and the chance to include family and friends\u00a0in a fuller expression of their faith.<\/p>\n<p>A wedding including a full Mass can last slightly over an hour,\u00a0while a wedding without one may last only about 20 minutes \u2014 a\u00a0period that can simply feel too short. The shorter version will\u00a0include readings, psalms, hymns, and blessings from the priest,\u00a0but not a celebration of the Eucharist.<\/p>\n<h2>Previous Marriages<\/h2>\n<p>Another unique aspect of the Catholic wedding\u00a0is how former marriages must be annulled before the couple can marry\u00a0within the church. Even if the previous marriage didn\u2019t qualify\u00a0to be recognized by the church, an annulment is still required before\u00a0the current one can take place. A legal divorce decree doesn\u2019t suffice\u00a0here. Instead, the formerly married bride or groom will need to\u00a0seek an annulment through the church asserting that the previous\u00a0marriage was invalid. While religious music is naturally preferred,\u00a0many churches nonetheless will consider secular music, so long as\u00a0the priest is willing to approve it before the wedding. While time\u00a0has given us many sublime musical choices, only some of them religious,\u00a0it\u2019s important to remember that priests are understandably hesitant\u00a0to play secular music within God\u2019s domain. Most couples find Pre-Cana quite\u00a0worthwhile. It gives them a forum for talking about and even resolving\u00a0potentially serious issues before the wedding takes place. This\u00a0time-honored tradition goes a long way toward ensuring that the\u00a0couple\u2019s a good match, with a good chance at a lasting union. Sessions\u00a0are usually hosted and moderated by a priest, and sometimes include\u00a0young married couples who can testify to both the bitter and sweet\u00a0of marriage.
