In the most\u00a0traditional Irish weddings, the Claddagh ring is passed down from\u00a0mother to daughter from generation to generation, not purchased\u00a0by the bride or groom.<\/p>\n<p>Another tradition involving the Claddagh states that a woman who\u00a0is engaged wear the ring with the crown tips facing outward, toward\u00a0the fingertips, on the right hand. In this position, the ring symbolizes\u00a0that the wearer is taken. When the bride actually marries, she moves\u00a0the ring to the left hand, still facing outward, signifying that\u00a0her heart is taken forever.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand (so to speak), an unattached man or woman typically\u00a0wears the ring on the right hand with the crown pointing inward,\u00a0symbolizing that the wearer\u2019s heart is still unoccupied. When the reception ends, the\u00a0guests gather around the newlyweds for one last toast.
