They\u2019re sure that I\u2019m taking in all their inadequacies at a glance, especially when they get older.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrides in their 20s and 30s are really apologetic. \u2018I\u2019m overweight because I\u2019ve been so stressed.\u2019 \u2018I\u2019ve got freckles because \u2026\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt 30, you still think you could look perfect if you just found that magic bullet. Older brides tell me everything that\u2019s wrong, but then they shrug. And I hear, \u2018What\u2019s the point? I don\u2019t wear makeup on a regular basis, so why should I now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a way,\u201d says Susan, \u201can older bride is more accepting of who she is, but sometimes she\u2019ll also relinquish her power. When you\u2019re in your 50s, sometimes you just give up. But you don\u2019t need to.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Knowing the Name of the Game<\/h2>\n<p>Susan, who\u2019s in her fifties, ticks off some challenges that crop up regularly as we age.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHooded eyelids, for one,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd skin that\u2019s taken a lot of abuse from sun, alcohol, bad food.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When a friend of hers asked for a makeover one day, Susan jumped at the chance. \u201cShe saw herself after, and said, \u2018Oh my gosh, I wish I could do this regularly.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI took a look at her arsenal. She had two makeup brushes from a kit she\u2019d bought 10 years ago, and one eyeshadow quad, with two shades broken.\u201d Susan jumped in and bought her some brushes and essentials, and the rest was history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf people are reintroduced to themselves and shown how they can look at 40, 50, 60, they get a new sense of excitement. They\u2019ve been looking at themselves for 30 years, and they don\u2019t expect to see someone new in the mirror. But if you tell anyone at any age their good points and how to make the most of them, they start to see themselves differently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLooking good is a game that anyone can learn to play. And once you learn how to play by the rules, it makes the game more fun and the end result more interesting.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Home Sweet Home\u2019 is Hard to Find<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI can almost tell a woman\u2019s history when she sits down,\u201d says Susan. \u201cIf she doesn\u2019t wear makeup or pay attention to her skin, her mother probably didn\u2019t either. Then there\u2019s other ladies with a bit of sharpness or polish to their appearance, and I can almost guarantee their mothers looked polished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir \u2018makeup history\u2019 matters, because there doesn\u2019t seem to be a place where women over 40 can comfortably go to learn how to apply makeup to themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Look at Mac, she says. \u201cThe products are top-notch, and they really apply to all ages. But my clients in thier 40s and 50s sometimes just feel out of their comfort zone at the counter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen, there\u2019s Mary Kay. They have great products too, and offer a safe environment \u2026 in your home. The problem there is learning how to make the most of your own unique features.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes,\u201d she says, \u201cI think women in their 50s and 60s feel they have to resort to drastic measures to look good. Like surgery. When really it comes down to simpler things: a healthy diet, drinking lots of water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStill, I think you have to embrace who you are. If you have fine lines, so what? You just have to find your upsides. I don\u2019t think that being 50, 60 or 70 is a negative. I kind of like how things are changing, like the Dove \u201cpro-age\u201d commercials. Sometimes I see these older women with white shimmer eyeshadow they just bought from a counter, and I think, \u2018Who sold this to you?&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That said, she adds, the makeup doesn\u2019t matter as much as the tools. \u201cYou just can\u2019t apply makeup in a flawless way without the right tools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, makeup technology has come a long way, and the older woman needs to leverage it, she says. \u201cThere are products to stop your lipstick from bleeding. There are silicone primers that keep your makeup in place until you wash it off. There are new mascaras that really do make your lashes longer and thicker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And, she adds, \u201cthere are shimmers now that are so finely milled, it\u2019s hard to tell they\u2019re shimmers. They really just reflect light and create a glow \u2026 both in person and digital photos.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone wants to have a bit of a youthful feel, and today, you can get that, even as an \u2018older bride.\u2019<br \/>\nDon\u2019t be afraid to try shimmers, the glossy lips, the long-wearing eyeliners.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>The Mature Bride\u2019s Playbook:<br \/>\nStep-By-Step, From Primers to Eyes<\/h2>\n<h3>Prepping the Skin<\/h3>\n<p>\u2018Don\u2019t mind the wrinkles,\u201d says Susan, \u201cbut do take care of your skin.\u201d For older women, this means exfoliating twice a week. Then, when it comes time to glam up, start with an emollient-rich moisturizer (skip the eyelids, though) and sunscreen before you add anything else.<\/p>\n<p>Also, she adds, don\u2019t try to hide your skin\u2019s unique texture. \u201cIf you try to totally cover up your freckles, age spots, fine lines or discolorations, you\u2019ll end up with a look that\u2019s flat and unflattering.\u201d Just play up your good features, she says. The rest will just serve to make you look like you \u2014 not you in a makeup mask.<\/p>\n<h3>Primed for Action<\/h3>\n<p>This is the first step before any foundation, says Susan. She says to apply a primer over the whole face, which keeps your makeup in place for hours. It acts as an invisible barrier, so the foundation, concealer, and blush don\u2019t sink into the skin. \u201cPrimers have come a long way,\u201d she says. \u201cYou want one of the silicone-based ones, which basically stays put until you wash it off.\u201d She likes Laura Mercier Foundation Primer.<\/p>\n<h3>A Firm Foundation<\/h3>\n<p>Foundation should be a liquid, says Susan. Liquid foundations are sheerer, and look better on mature skin. Try any line, she says, but apply it with a foundation brush.<\/p>\n<p>Same thing with concealer: choose a liquid, and apply with a brush. \u201cTry Makeup Forever,\u201d she says. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t migrate to the fine lines under the eye.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Powders, Bronzers and Blush \u2014 Oh My \u2026<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t: Go overboard on the Powder.<\/strong> \u201cWomen over 40 feel they need to powder everything. But you usually shouldn\u2019t wear powder at that age. It absorbs light, and makes your skin look flat, lifeless, older.\u201d Apply if you\u2019ve got an oily forehead, she advises \u2014 or use a small amount of anti-shine gel, like Smashbox anti-shine \u2014 but powdering your whole face can make it look dull, not luminous or dewy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do: Use a slightly shimmery bronzer. <\/strong>\u201cAs we age, we tend to lose color in our face,\u201d says Susan. The solution? Bronzer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChoose one from any line, with a touch of shimmer,\u201d she says. \u201cDust with a fan brush where the sun would naturally hit: your cheeks, the bridge of your nose, your forehead and even the chin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then, for blush, choose a soft pink, peach or bronze with a touch of shimmer, and apply to the apples of the cheeks with a large, soft brush.<\/p>\n<h3>Luscious Lips<\/h3>\n<p>For older women, the challenge is to keep the lip color in place, and make sure it doesn\u2019t bleed or migrate to fine lines around the mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Susan\u2019s secret: \u201cApply Mac brow pencil in Clear over natural lip line. This product\u2019s actually designed for brows, but it works extremely well to seal in your natural lip line.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Outline the lips with a pencil to correct the line, or add fullness if needed. \u201cA Mac pencil in \u2018Spice\u2019 is one of my favorites,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Now fill in the lips with lipstick. \u201cPick a lipstick that\u2019s at least 2 to 3 tones darker than your own lips,\u201d says Susan. Also, she adds, apply it with a retractable brush, not straight from the tube. \u201cThe results are much more accurate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The finishing touch? A dab of gloss in the fullest parts for a sexy pout.<\/p>\n<h3>Extraordinary Eyes<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cEye shadow really helps define your eyes, especially in photos,\u201d says Susan, who suggests applying a flat, neutral tone on the lids.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can also add a touch of pale shimmer on the brow bone to help create an instant eyelift.\u201d Then, brush a deeper shadow to the outer corners of the eyes in soft, upward strokes for a large-looking eye.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shadows: <\/strong>\u201cChoose soft neutral earth tones from any line,\u201d says Susan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brushes:<\/strong> \u201cYou want a natural bristle brush. Go with brushes from any large company like Mac, Sephora, Bobbi Brown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pencils: <\/strong>\u201cI really like Mac Powerpoint waterproof pencil in a dark brown or charcoal. You can apply it and leave it as is, or smudge it with a small brush.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gel liner:<\/strong> \u201cTry Mac Fluidline in a soft black or brown. This adds more intensity at the lash line, and it stays in place.\u201d And same as above, she says: leave a distinct line, or smudge with a brush for a softer look.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brows: <\/strong>Be sure to define and fill in your brows, says Susan \u2014 it makes a huge difference in photos. \u201cChoose a pencil that\u2019s the same color as your hair. And apply with a light touch \u2014 you don\u2019t want thick, heavy strokes.\u201d Susan likes the Mac self-sharpening brow pencil. \u201cIt stays in place, sticks to skin and looks natural.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lashes:<\/strong> Apply one coat of waterproof black mascara, she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut here\u2019s a secret to looking really great \u2026 false lashes.\u201d Today\u2019s lashes are nothing like what you found at the drugstore 20 years ago, she says, and even the lashes there are far more subtle and sophisticated than they used to be.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d apply about 4 small clusters to the outer corners of each eye. People will know you look amazing, but they won\u2019t see the lashes. They\u2019re very discreet.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Stand Back, Sum It Up<\/h2>\n<p>Now, stand back and take a good look at yourself objectively. Is it blended? Is the look too strong, or too subtle? \u201cYou don\u2019t want a look that\u2019s overpowering, but many women who haven\u2019t worn makeup for a while aren\u2019t used to it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive your new look a bit of a chance, making sure it\u2019s very well blended. Just remember that photos can really wash you out,\u201d advises Susan. \u201cAt the same time, they can intensify your makeup.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And if you\u2019re not going to go it alone for the big day? \u201cYou might be more comfortable with a makeup artist around your age,\u201d says Susan. \u201cWith those years of experience, she understands!
