What is it about this feminine flower?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHydrangeas are full and understated at the same time,\u201d says Dani, a bride whose florist suggested green and white ones as a cornerstone for her floral arrangements. \u201cThey look simple without being simplistic.\u201d The dreamy hues of periwinkle and lilac captured Haley, a garden theme bride. \u201cThey\u2019re pale, but not pastel. Haley agrees: \u201ccost-wise, I think they\u2019re great. Even one stem of hydrangea fills out an arrangement.\u201d But what factors led to these lower costs and better looks?<\/p>\n<p>The globalization of the floral market, says Rockcastle, which means that florists aren\u2019t stuck relying on local products anymore. Instead, sourcing mostly from South America, they can buy gorgeous hydrangeas that cost less and look even better.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe local ones are really big,\u201d she explains, \u201cabout the size of the human head.\u201d She laughs. \u201cBut the ones from South Africa are more compact. Did pink head the list? \u201cActually, pink <i>was<\/i> really popular,\u201d says Rockcastle. \u201cIt had a great run a few years ago. Well, not quite.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou never quite know what color will show up,\u201d says Rockcastle. \u201cWe order them pink and they come in green, or we order them green and they come in ivory. \u201cSo we \u2018tip\u2019 them with a floral-safe spray. Sometimes we have a bride that wants a strong lime green, and for that we definitely tip.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And even if you\u2019re more easy-going about the exact shade of your blooms, hydrangeas still need their share of TLC. \u201cFor a while, people were experimenting,\u201d says Rockcastle, \u201ctrying to use them without water in a garden or a clutch bouquet. The hydrangeas were not holding up for that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese days, many florists go water-only. In fact, with most of the hydrangea bouquets you\u2019ll see, the blooms are cut short, and placed in an Oasis bouquet holder. We see brides doing more and more research online for all their wedding-related items: favors, and most definitely flowers.<\/p>\n<h2>Hydrangeas seem to be on a major upswing. Are you selling more this season?<\/h2>\n<p>Hydrangeas have always been popular flowers for us; they\u2019re one of our best sellers. They\u2019re perfect for weddings, and easy to care for and prep.<\/p>\n<h2>Any special tricks for brides to keep them fresh and help them last?<\/h2>\n<p>Well, our flowers come packed with water\/cotton bags for shipping, but the rules for hydrangeas are the same for all fresh flowers: keep them cool, cut the stems and make sure they have plenty to drink.<\/p>\n<h2>What color hydrangeas are hot this year?<\/h2>\n<p>White is number one. It\u2019s elegant and classy for just about any kind of wedding. Number two, I\u2019d say, is antique green, which is a very beautiful, naturally-colored flower \u2014 woven into the green you see hints of burgundy and blue.<\/p>\n<p>Light blues are also very popular with brides.<\/p>\n<h2>Are your brides ordering hydrangeas \u201cstraight,\u201d or are they pairing them with other flowers?<\/h2>\n<p>90% of brides are buying hydrangeas as their main and only focal flowers.
