Despite its many (and sometimes jarring) cultural changes, Russia\u00a0enjoys many wedding traditions reaching far back in time. True,
\nthe ceremony itself is relatively devoid of them in this post-Bolshevik\u00a0age, but the reception is a different matter in which the oldest,
\nmost opulent customs are still going strong.<\/p>\n

At this stage, Russian law no longer recognizes church weddings,\u00a0so couples that wish to marry must go through a civil wedding ceremony.\u00a0At the end of it, the couple is handed bread and salt, which represents\u00a0health and prosperity. Despite this small nod to tradition, most\u00a0family members consider the civil ceremony a mere formality, and\u00a0give it a pass. Within the culture, the two-day extravaganza of\u00a0a reception is considered far more important than the ceremony itself.<\/p>\n

Despite its relative insignificance to family members and guests, the civil ceremony involves some effort on the\u00a0part of the bridal couple. <\/span>First of all, the day begins with the bride and groom ensconced in different camps, each surrounded by their own family and friends. And then the games begin. The groom, you see, will start to make his way toward the bride long before the civil ceremony is scheduled to begin. Why? Because the bride\u2019s friends and family will try to block him.<\/p>\n

For example, let\u2019s say the bride lives on the top floor of a tall apartment complex. In this case, the unfortunate groom will be stopped at each floor by the bride\u2019s party and interrogated \u2014 perhaps he\u2019ll be asked trivia questions about his intended. But if he answers them wrong, he\u2019ll have to reach into his pocket and fish out some cash to get to the next floor.<\/p>\n

Once he\u2019s cleared these hurdles, the bride and groom will then\u00a0travel by train to the site of the civil service, but in separate\u00a0cars. Only the closest friends and family will join him at this\u00a0stage, since the ceremony\u2019s considered so unimportant.<\/p>\n

Immediately after the ceremony, the couple\u00a0then embarks on a tour of the city to visit the graves of those\u00a0who have died in service.<\/span> This stage of the tour usually\u00a0lasts two to three hours, during which the couple honors those killed\u00a0in wars by laying flowers at the foot of their memorials. Again,\u00a0the couple is typically alone, except for the two people who served\u00a0as witnesses at the civil ceremony. Occasionally one or two other\u00a0close friends will accompany them, but the family rarely does because\u00a0they\u2019re so busy preparing for the reception.<\/p>\n

After the tour of the city and the honoring of the dead, the couple\u00a0finally arrives at the reception \u2014 and this is where the true festivities begin. Always, the reception begins with a toast \u2014 typically, the\u00a0parents are the first to toast the bride and groom. Then, the rest\u00a0of the guests follow suit.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s during the toasts that you begin to\u00a0see Russian tradition coming alive.<\/span> After each toast, the guests sip their wine, then shout, \u201cGor\u2019ko,\u201d meaning\u00a0bitter<\/em>. It\u2019s up to the couple to sweeten the wine \u2014 by kissing. Needless to say, guests indulge in this tradition after each and every toast, and ultimately wrangle a lot of kissing from the couple.<\/p>\n

The remainder of the night one is filled with exuberant dancing,\u00a0plus another unique Russian tradition of \u201ckidnapping.\u201d\u00a0The friends of the groom take advantage of the chaos on the dance\u00a0floor by making away with the bride. They then demand that the hapless\u00a0groom pay a ransom for her recovery.<\/p>\n

Sure enough, the bride\u2019s friends get in on the fun by \u201cstealing\u201d\u00a0the bride\u2019s shoes, and once again, the groom pays a ransom to get\u00a0her shoes back. Day one continues on late into the night, both delighting\u00a0and exhausting the guests.<\/p>\n

The second day of a traditional Russian wedding\u00a0is usually much more relaxed, and takes place at the house with\u00a0a couple will start their lives together.<\/span> Although politeness dictates that anyone from day one is invited, usually only close\u00a0friends and family members join this more intimate day of celebration.<\/p>\n

With a nod to the demands of the night before, day two of a Russian\u00a0wedding usually starts in the late afternoon or early evening. First\u00a0of all, the guests enjoy a meal together. Then, after the meal,\u00a0the bride fulfills another Russian tradition by cleaning the floor.<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t as arduous or unpleasant as it sounds, though; the\u00a0guests will \u201clitter\u201d the floor with paper money and coins,\u00a0and it\u2019s the bride\u2019s happy duty to tidy up by scooping up the money.\u00a0The guests are free to continue littering while the bride is busy\u00a0cleaning, and most people particularly love to bring out large bags\u00a0of coins to scatter, making the bride\u2019s job as difficult as possible.\u00a0Despite the humor, this tradition lets guests make a meaningful\u00a0contribution to the newlyweds.<\/p>\n

So there you have it \u2014 the traditional Russian\u00a0wedding amounts to two exuberant days of food, drink, humor and friends.<\/span> As mentioned, the ceremony amounts to a mere afterthought,\u00a0since the government only recognizes marriages that take place through\u00a0the civil service. In fact, a couple set on a church service will\u00a0have to marry to the civil service ahead of time.
