How To Add Personal Flair To Your Wedding Cake

A little thought goes a long way in adding that finishing touch to your wedding cake – and a wedding cake topper can be the crowing touch to the much-anticipated dessert.

With so many creative ideas for wedding desserts these days, the hardest part may be deciding what deliciously decadent desserts to serve guests at the reception.  Popular ideas include cupcakes, mini desserts, a dessert bar and over-the-top wedding cakes, such as those seen on popular shows like Cake Boss and Ace of Cakes.

Think of the wedding cake as the grand finale to your well planned and rehearsed “after party.” A humorous cake topper is a whimsical touch, while a monogram topper makes it glamorous and personal.  Serving cupcakes or mini desserts?  Why not have them decorated with initials of the new Mr. and Mrs.?  Serve with monogram napkins to pull it all together.

You’ve put so much time, thought and energy into planning your big day; so don’t overlook small details that can have a big impact.  Custom cake toppers set your decorated tower of sugary goodness apart from the generic wedding cake.

Work with your bakery of choice to discuss the location and possibilities of adding a topper.  Better yet, purchase it beforehand and bring it with you to your consultation to create the wedding cake of your dreams.

What type of wedding are you planning?  A formal affair calls for an elegant topper perhaps embellished with dazzling crystals.  Are you and your fiancé outdoor enthusiasts or sports fans?  A casual wedding is the perfect place to debut a humorous cake topper featuring your favorite activities.  This memento will be cherished for years to come and can be used to celebrate your anniversaries.

After the food, first dance, toasts and other traditions, couples typically wrap up the reception with the cutting of the cake.  Your guests and photographer can’t wait to capture this photo opportunity, and the groom is often trying to resist smearing the frosted cake slice on your perfectly done up face (but we know he wouldn’t do that!)

Let your wedding cake be the shining star of your reception and not an after thought.  You want it to taste good and look good!

Decorating the dessert table can be as fun and creative as the reception tables.  Consider the wedding cake the centerpiece and work from there.  Play with different colors, use a monochromatic scheme, serve on beautiful dishes, personalize dessert napkins, display engagement photos, etc. And don’t forget to use beautiful cake kife and serving set that will show off your style and be a lasting remembrance from that “sweet” day.

Ask your parents and in-laws to see photos from their wedding as they cut the cake.  Was it formal, posed, traditional?  Perhaps frame and display an 8×10 black and white photo of this moment on your cake table with a caption – that’s definitely one way to create a conversation piece and memorable picture.

The possibilities are endless for adding personal flair to your wedding cake or dessert table, so think outside of the cake box!

I agree that the wedding cake is a very important part of the reception. I always suggest to the bride that it be placed in a very visible location because all the guests want to be a part of that tradition and a lot of the times, ht bride doesn’t think about that.

That bottom cake with the red roses is a stunner. To me, the wedding is all about the cake and the dress! (I know that’s terrible to say!!!!)
