The Question

Do you have any suggestions on how to give a great son of the groom speech?

Hi there, I am 23 and my father is having his second marriage at the beginning of next month and has said that I am more than welcome to give a short speech if I wish.

I would love to do this but have no idea what to say having not been to any weddings since childhood and certainly having never given a speech! The wedding is fairly informal and I believe that I am not the only other speaker in addition to the traditional father of the bride, groom, best man etc. I am also reading a sonnet in the ceremony. Any suggestions or ideas with regards the speech would be gratefully received!

Our Answer

The best way to go is to speak from the heart. Your words are going to be the best way to convey how you feel and it’ll mean even more to your father and new stepmother as well.

Mention your relationship with your father, perhaps a bit about his relationship with his bride, and your wishes for them in the future. In the meantime, check out our quick tips and ideas below as well!

Example of Son of Groom Speech

“After all the times my dad has been there to share my big life moments, it’s an honor for me to be here today to share his. He’s not just a role model. He’s a roles model. In the roles of dad, mentor, friend, and once again, husband and loving companion, he multi-tasks with a devotion that leaves us “single-taskers” in the dust.

My name is John and I’m excited to be the best man at my father’s wedding. At this point in the proceedings, it is traditional to bring up an embarrassing moment from the groom’s past, or to highlight a strange character trait so that you can have a laugh at his expense; but on the basis that dad has got so much more on me than I have on him, in the interest of self-preservation, I’m just going to skip that.”
