Readers Ask

I need some advice regarding what to wear to a reception – it will take place in October at a country club, and is scheduled to start at 6:30pm. What should I wear?

If you haven’t gotten any clues from the invitation itself, meaning it doesn’t say “black tie” or something of the sort, take your clue from the time of day and the style of the invite. More formal invitations suggest a more formal event and, therefore, you’d dress more formally.

Take into consideration the time of day as well, a 6:30pm ceremony will automatically set off red flags for suits, slacks and the like. Country clubs are usually more sophisticated as well.

For men, go with slacks and a button up or even a suit with or without a tie, depending on your comfort level. Ladies can go with cocktail dresses while the kiddos should dress in similar ways. Pretty dresses for the little gals and small suits for the boys will work nicely!

If it was a daytime or morning ceremony, the attire would be a bit lighter and flirties; nice sundresses for the ladies and khakis with nice shirts for the men.

Other “Expert” Opinions

“Your question is pretty general in nature… Do you know the Country Club? Are you close to the wedding party or family to simply “ask”? Does the invitation appear “formal?” It is not “black tie” or the invitation would have stated so. Country Club weddings can be very formal or casual, depending upon the couple. It is an evening reception. When in doubt, you can feel safe in a simple cocktail dress and complementing jewelry (pearls are NEVER wrong). Nothing to overpower the bride…

OR dressy dress or suit. Accessorize for evening wear.

Have a good time!” – Gena Conti, Owner, Designer, Milliner At Gena Conti Millinery

“I would suggest trying a knee or tea length cocktail type dress. Add some heels and great jewelry and you’ll be set. You could even complement the look with a shawl or pashmina to cover the arms and add a bit of warmth.” – Taylor Eisenberger, Owner, Designer At Taylored For You Bridal Boutique

“ The attire for a golf course wedding is similar to a country club wedding, which, unless specifically stated otherwise on the invitation, typically means cocktail attire or semi-formal wear with a preppy twist. Opt for pretty and flirty rather than sultry and sexy. Think pretty pastels (a current trend), lace or eyelet details, and shoes that won’t poke holes in the gorgeous golf course (think wedges or chunky heels). Of course, your black cocktail dress will work too, but consider softening it up with a light colored wrap or bow belt.” – SIXated
