A father of the bride speech is traditionally the first to be delivered during the speeches at a wedding breakfast, but it doesn’t have to be long.
While some fathers will deliver a long and memorable speech about their daughter growing up, how she met her new husband, stories of their life as a couple in the years preceding the wedding, their engagement, being asked for permission to marry and of course advice on what lies ahead as a married couple, others are less comfortable speaking and may want to keep things much shorter.
A short father of the bride speech is not unusual. It is quite common for some to last little more than a minute before passing on to the groom and best man for the much more anticipated speeches.
There’s some almost pre-requisite things a father of the bride should include in his speech – or one or two essentials. But what is right to including and what is not needed if you’re keeping things brief? And can it contain some father of the bride speech jokes?
The speech, for starters, should welcome the assembled guests and thank them being part of the day.
It should also congratulate your daughter and the groom on becoming husband and wife, but you don’t need to include lengthy stories about how they met, what they are like as a couple tell some funny stories about them either, just like in these father of the bride speech examples.
If you’re not comfortable speaking, don’t get drawn into those sometimes long-winded stories. Leave those sorts of things to the groom, best man or even maid of honor speeches.
Don’t feel you have to try and entertain the guests with funny stories from her childhood, some of the scrapes you’ve got her out of and tell a few jokes about what her new husband has let himself in for.

But what you should do, of course, is welcome your new son-in-law to the family and his parents into your extended family, and raise a toast to the happy couple along with perhaps a word of advice or two for the happy couple to take into married life.
An example of a short father of the bride speech and the essential information you need to include or take inspiration use the longer father of the bride speech template to pick out the bits you’d like to include:
“I’d like to welcome you all here today to celebrate the marriage of [XXXX]. It’s been a great day already and I’m sure you’ll join me in which the happy couple of the happiness in their future.
“[Welcome your new son-in-law into the family and his parents into the family]
Example: “I’d like to take a moment to welcome [XXXX] into the family and also his parents [XXXX] and [XXXX]. He’s a lovely lad and you’ve done a great job in turning him into the man he is.
“[Send the happy couple into marriage with a thought or two]
Example: “Today will be the happiest day of your lives, but you’ve got many more lying ahead of you. You’re heading on an amazing journey together and I wish you every happiness.”
“I’d like you to be upstanding and toast the happy couple”.
