Essential Components: How to Write a Speech That Rocks

Giving a wedding speech is a great honor, but most of us immediately get writer’s block or freak out at the thought of coming up with what to say. Where do you start?

Before you begin your wedding speech or toast preparation, write down some thoughts about the couple’s relationship, how they met, how you know them, their personalities, or general thoughts about marriage. Once you have some of these ideas down on paper you have a framework to work from.

Make Your Speech Personal

How do you know the bride and groom? How do you feel about them? Were you involved when the bride and groom met? Do you know details of the proposal? Do they have cute nicknames for each other? It makes sense for anybody giving a speech to make it personal. Guests are going to appreciate the love and connection that comes from doing that.

Add A Touch of Humor (but not too much)

We love wedding speeches with humor. It is great if you can add a few one-liners and make a joke or two. In saying that, the best speech balances funny with heartfelt. If it’s too sentimental, you’ll have guests falling asleep. If you’re doing a 10 minutes comedy routine, then you could offend people and you lost the meaning of the special occasion. It is about balance.

Thank Everyone Who Deserves a Thank You

Thank the relevant people and make sure you’re specific where you can be. This takes some preparation, make sure you ask around to see who helped out with the wedding. And don’t forget the families of the bride and groom too, as well as members of the bridal party.

Write a Strong Speech Opener & Closer

You need to get people’s attention immediately. That means having a strong opener and a strong closer. Use a short Irish wedding toast, a cute saying or a funny quote. The idea is to give your best wishes, sum up the spirit of marriage or to give a toast.

The Ideal Speech Length

There are going to be a bunch of wedding speeches. Don’t bore people with a long speech. Save the long or potentially embarrassing stories for the bachelor or bachelorette party. Be brief and memorable.

Practice Your Speech Before The Big Day!

Practice and preparation makes perfect. Make eye contact and speak to all the guests. You can’t do that while looking down at a piece of paper or just going off the cuff. That means you need to prepare and have something written down and rehearsed. Practice, practice, practice. Stand in front of the mirror and rehearse till you are comfortable and confident. Practice until you look good, until you can watch yourself in the mirror – and ultimately look at the audience – while speaking.

A Few Things Not To Include in Your Speech

The rules here are quite simple. First things first, it’s never funny to make racist jokes or comments about any of the families’ cultures or traditions. Leave out all profanities or jokes that are on the obscene or offensive lines.

Poke fun at the groom but don’t cross the line and hurt anyone’s feelings. Leave out stories of drunken nights or ex’s. Steer away from any sexual innuendos as well. Use your common sense.

You want to walk away with the bride and groom feeling good, not humiliated.

What is the Order of Speeches at a Wedding?

In the good old days, wedding speeches were simple. You had the Father of the Bride and the Best Man. Each would get up, give a quick toast and it was over. These days, we have lots of wedding speeches. Just about every person at the wedding gives a speech, so having some kind of order of wedding speeches not only makes sense, but has some wedding etiquette to it too.

The wedding speech order can vary and nothing is set in stone, but as a couple you must remember that the key goal of this part of the wedding is to ensure guests are enjoy themselves and that everybody gets to hear what is said. Broadly, that means speeches happen towards the end of the meal.

If you take the standard order of wedding speeches, the Best Man will give his speech or toast first. He will toast the bride and groom and is, generally, the MC for the night. After the Best Man speech the groom will respond, toast his new bride, and thank the parents and so on. The Father of the Bride gives his speech last.

So you’ve decided you want to get married. But have you decided how you’re going to propose? Do you want to be one of those couples who everyone videos and then watches on YouTube with their hand on their heart? Or do you want ask them over breakfast with the same nonchalance as when you asked if they wanted any marmalade? If you’re the former, here are seven ways to make your proposal unique.

1. Involve the Important People in Your Lives

Arrange a special day in the name of making your partner feel good. Invite all of your shared friends and all of the people who are exclusively your partner’s friend as well. This should be done at their favorite restaurant. Have each person give a little speech about why your partner is so wonderful, then give your own speech for the finale, which ends “…which is why I want to spend the rest of my life with you.”

2. Make a Cute Video

To pull at those heart strings and make them feel nostalgic, why not have somebody create a short animation which summarises your relationship up to this point. It could have child-like animation to represent the pureness of your love, along with a song that means a lot to you both. It would end on the proposal of marriage.

3. Create a Mystery to Solve Together

Draw up some kind of code and ask your partner to marry you in it. You could solve the code together and, along the way, set up things which will remind you both of many nostalgic memories and experiences. The cracking of the code and the discovery of the proposal would make for an emotional conclusion.

4. Make a Cute Video Game

This one won’t apply if your partner doesn’t like video games, but what you could do is make a fun game for you to both play together. It could be full of references to your shared history (similar to the video idea above) and conclude with a proposal message.

5. Incorporate Animals

Who doesn’t love a trip to the zoo? And I am sure your partner would be quite excited by the prospect of getting to interact with their very favorite animal (unless it’s a hippo or something) and perhaps when it comes along, it has a message from you around it’s neck: it’s your proposal! Or maybe you could dive into the aquarium tank and hold up the question to your partner in the viewing area.

6. Find a Hidden Treasure

Arrange a luxurious trip to the beach. Ahead of time, find a secluded area for you to bury a treasure chest (really, your ring and proposal.) Have somebody watch the spot of the ‘treasure’ so that it isn’t stolen and then you can discover it together. A great and exciting experience to share.

 7. Make it Special, by Being Ordinary

Spend the whole day together, but instead of doing anything extravagant, just stay in and share each other’s time. Joke together, talk about your feelings, watch your favorite film, order a pizza, listen to some nice music. Have a great time without going out or even getting dressed. At the end of it all, tell them that you value their time above all else and even if you don’t have a life full of the most amazing luxuries, a life shared with them is an amazing luxury. With so many extravagant proposals out there, this minimalist approach will be very unique.

The Attire

When it comes to dresses, you don’t get much more magical than Belles beautiful gown. Choosing the right dress is the first step in creating your Disney themed day, and luckily there are lots of stunning designs to choose from that are specially created with princesses in mind. If you want a more subtle look, think about finding a dress with some yellow detailing or off the shoulder style to channel your inner Belle.

Once you’ve picked the perfect gown, make sure your prince also looks the part. A good way to recreate the theme is with a navy suit and a yellow tie and accessories for a modern twist on the beasts classic ensemble. The Decor

Many jackets feature double pockets on one side of the jacket. This extra pocket is the perfect place for the best man to keep the rings safe.

Most of the trousers that are available are straight cut. These look smart, and work well for most body types.

Tuxedos and Morning Suits

It is important for the suits that the wedding party wears to be special. The last thing you want if for the men to look like that they are about to attend a business meeting.

 To avoid this happening many couples opt to have the men in the wedding party dress in a cut that is not seen much in everyday life. That is one reason morning style suits and tuxedos are still popular. This wedding fashion trend is set to stay. However, understandably, most people prefer to hire this style of suit rather than buy them.

Three Piece Suits

For 2017, waistcoats are very much in vogue, so you can expect to see a lot of wedding parties kitted out in three piece suits. Most are cut from the same material as the rest of the suit, but if you want something a bit more interesting they are available. It is just that you may need to buy a two piece suit, and buy the waistcoat separately.

A Muted Colour Palette

The majority of the suits we have seen in the shops, this year, are plain and mainly available in blue or grey tones. Although a few retailers are also stocking light brown and olive green suits.

For 2017, check patterned suits are another potential option. Most of the ones we have seen, so far, are very low key, and subtle, but they are still a good option for a best man that does not want to wear a plain suit.

The couple wed at Hunter Valley Gardens, NSW with their favourite moment being able to steal their photographer and bridal party away between the ceremony and reception to embrace the day so far before celebration. Aliesha and Jonathan met as neighbors and have been dating since the sweet age of 15 and he romantically proposed along the harbor.

How did you and your partner meet?

It was well and truly young love as we met when we were neighbors and have been dating since I was 15 years old.

How did he propose?

The evening started with a helicopter ride to Sydney from the Blue Mountains. We were then driven in a Bentley to the Park Hyatt from the airport. There we had a beautiful degustation dinner in the ‘Dining Room’ followed by a romantic walk along the harbor where he proposed with the perfect view overlooking all of the lights. My husband is very spontaneous!

How did you choose your wedding gown?

It was quite the process as it took many, many shopping trips! I drew my inspiration for my wedding gown from lots of pins on my dream board. Interestingly enough, the dress I ended up with was completely different to what I had imagined but as soon as you see the perfect one, you just know. I fell in love with it!

What sort of style did you envision for your wedding day?

Originally, I wanted a beach wedding which slowly evolved into a vineyard wedding which, when looking for venues in the Hunter Valley, turned into an end product at the Hunter Valley Gardens where I got the best of all worlds, I feel.

What was your favorite moment from the day?

My favourite moment from our wedding day was when my husband and I took the time to go offsite with our photographer, videographer and wedding party between the ceremony and reception to capture some heartfelt shots. For us, it important to really take in the day and everything that had happened so far and to share in the excitement of the evening ahead with those we love most.

Any DIY décor elements?

DIY elements included the place cards and the table and seating chart.

If you could do it all over again, what would you change?

Nothing!!! I can actually say I look back and love all of my memories – of course there were some little hiccups, but I think it made the day pretty special overall.

We always recommend that your registry be a mix of must-have home essentials, things you’ve always wanted and items that reflect your hobbies — DIY and home improvement tools, sporting goods and even bottles of wine. Mix it up a little!

When starting your registry keep the following tips in mind:

  1. Create a Registry: Friends and family want to buy you something you want and need so not having a registry for them to turn to will make the process more stressful for them. In addition to household items you can create a registry of products that reflect your hobbies or interests, a list of charities guests can donate to or a travel program to treat you to meals and activities while you’re on your honeymoon.
  2. Register Early: You should register pretty soon after getting engaged. People are going to want to buy things for you fast, so being ready with your registry makes everybody’s life easier.

1. Should I register online or in the store?

We suggest to do both! Give your guests options and yourself as well. Building a registry online is super easy and can be a lot fun for both the bride and the groom. You can add things that aren’t easy to find in stores and get more unique items placed on your lists.

Physically going to the stores and grabbing one of those scanners is an entirely different experience though too. Do both and have a blast with each!

2. This is my second wedding. Can I still register?

Absolutely!

A new home, a new marriage and lots of guests means that a lists of possible gifts are needed for your loved ones to peek at.

3. Can I register for incredibly pricey items like China?

Yes, you can! If you’ve fallen in love with something, there’s no harm in putting it on the registry. As long as you don’t have a list full of only high-priced items and your guests have options to choose from, you’re in the clear!

4. How much do I register for?

Always go with more rather than less. The rule of thumb is to register for at least two gifts per person. This way all of your guests have lots of options to choose from and none will become frustrated or pigeonholed.

5. What kind of retailers do I register at?

Register wherever you’d like. Popular stores include, Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, Dillards, Nordstrom and more. But even Amazon has a spot to house your wedding wish list. You’ll need to register at more than one so mix it up a bit.

Have a list at a more expensive retailer, something more mainstream and then something a bit more unique like a honeymoon fund or charity.

6. Do I need separate registries for the bridal shower and the wedding?

No, you don’t. Of course, you’ll be creating different lists at different stores but the gifts are essentially all going to the same place – the newlyweds! You don’t need to specify, allow guests to do what they want in terms of bringing presents to the shower and/or to the wedding.

7. When do I take my wedding registry down?

Most retailers will do this for you. Usually, the registry will stay active for a year after the wedding and you’ll be notified of its closure. Of course, you can always close it yourself a month or two after the wedding is over giving guests a chance that couldn’t attend a way for them to send something in lieu of their absence.

8. Do I have to register for only traditional items?

The content of the registry is completely up to you and your partner. If you don’t cook much at home, you don’t need to have a plethora of kitchen items taking up space on your list. Mix up the items that fit both your needs but also your wants and interests.

9. Can I have someone come with me besides the groom?

Of course you can! Moms and best friends, sisters too, whether the groom is there or not, it’s okay to have someone else by your side offering up advice. As long as the almost-newlyweds are both comfortable and happy with the decision, go for it!

10. What are some things to register for that I may not think of?

There are lots of practical items that people forget to register for or don’t think they can! For example, storage bins for the attic, garage shelving, mattress covers, iron & ironing boards and even patio furniture are all great options!

DO Get the word out but DON’T include registry cards within the actual wedding invitation.

It should be general knowledge as wedding etiquette rule number one to never include registry cards in with the wedding invitation. Directing your guests towards your own wedding website, however, that so happens to contain a registry – as well as all of the other details of your wedding – can be a little more tactful. Just include the domain URL to your wedding website on your invitations and let your guests do the rest.

With the various list of new top level domains on the internet, you can even get creative and include your name and your fiancé’s name in the domain, with .wedding instead of .com or something else cute and to your taste.

DO set up your registry at least 4-5 months before the main event.

You want to set up your registry early enough that people aren’t scrambling to buy a gift at the last minute. Normally 4-5 months before the wedding is a good enough amount of time to finalize your registry. If you do go the personal wedding website rout, which includes your registry, you will be able to add to or revise items at will, which can help aid the time constraint of seasonal items, as well as give you more freedom if something comes to mind or your wishes change.

DON’T register at over three different stores.

It is important that you practice a little restraint here. If your guests visit your registry and see 20 different stores on it, they will most likely get overwhelmed by too many options. The general rule of thumb is to limit your store choices to a maximum of three, and don’t register for similar items at each store. If you choose stores that have a wide variety of products instead of incredibly specialized, you are more likely to cover all of your desired gift areas.

On the other hand, if you already have all of the things that you need, you can easily set up a specialized registry for guests to give contributions to charities of your choice, or even set up a honeymoon registry so that guests can contribute to your honeymoon instead.

DO mix up item price points and types.

Ultimately, you should stick to a price range that you yourself are willing to pay at a friend or family member’s wedding. Or, if you do have “big ticket” items, then set it up in a way that more than one guest can contribute towards that gift. Also, stay away from anything that seems like a “gift grab.”

Although you may want a hot tub or a plasma TV, you should include gift items on your registry that seem practical as well as romantic. After all, you really want your guests there to share the day with you, gifts themselves are a secondary kind gesture and not the reason for the invitation.

Option 1: It Just Catches Your Fancy

The good news is there is no shortage of wedding favor inspiration on the web and in magazines. Between Pinterest, Etsy and thousands of other websites, you can find every conceivable wedding favor idea on earth. You could just search all these places and randomly select something you think is awesome. Crazier things have been done before.

Option 2: Choose Based on Season

If you’re having a summer wedding on the beach, then maybe a pair of cool sunglasses or flip flops is a fitting wedding favor for guests. For a fall wedding, package baked goods are always fun or maybe some dark candles. Spring time weddings could lead to planting seeds, some miniature champagne bottles or potted plants. For winter, warm blankets or hot cocoa kits could top off the night.

Option 3: Wedding Theme Based Favors

If pink is your color palette, set up a candy bar loaded with all your favorite treats in those particular hues. Throwing a rustic wedding, create a popcorn bar, complete with sweet and salty flavors they can mix and match. It’s great for getting your guests up and off their feet as well.

Option 4: Go Local

Find a local supplier of unique goods and consider giving those to your guests. If you’re in BBQ-land, maybe some hot sauce or marinades with names on them. If you’re in Vermont, maybe some Ben & Jerry’s ice cream for the local flair. It may take some time to find local suppliers, but local wedding favors add a nice touch.

Option 5: Donate In Lieu of Favors

Whether it’s a cause that’s close to your heart, such as a cancer research group, or a cause that you support, such as animal shelters, be sure to let each guest know of the donation by placing a note at each place setting or table for guests to read. To find the right organization, do your research.

Option 6: Double-Duty Wedding Favors

Make your favors and your escort cards one in the same. From lollipops to Christmas ornaments, tag your favors with each guest’s name and table number and place them on the escort table. Other escort card/favor pair-ups: apples with tags tied to the stem; luggage tags with table numbers tucked inside; and miniature wine bottles with table number and name labels.

Keep Your Theme in Mind

I’m sure you’ve spent a whole lot of time brainstorming the perfect elements to fulfill your wedding theme. So why would you want to throw the entire concept out the window once it’s time choose favors?

Choosing favors that don’t exactly coincide with your theme might actually do more harm than good by confusing your guests. So stay away from selecting a blue bottle of bubbles when you’re planning a Halloween or Fall wedding.

You should also have favors match the tone of the wedding. Formal weddings call for very elegant favors while casual outdoor weddings may not. If matching favors to the theme is too difficult, try matching colors.

Decide Who Will be Getting Favors

Ideally, purchasing favors for each guest is preferred. Some consider buying one favor per couple or family. This tactic is not recommended if you have a large guest list since it would be difficult to distribute the favors at the table settings.

Analyze your budget and guest list to determine what is best for you. If circumstances dictate your purchase one gift per couple or family, try getting something that all can enjoy.

Think About Packaging

A favor has to be more than just pretty and useful for the guests. It also has to be packaged well. Depending on how you plan to present your favors and where the wedding is being held, packaging can make a world of difference when celebrating your wedding.

If you plan on having favors placed on each guest’s table setting, be sure that the packaging fits in well with the table décor. Having a destination wedding? Make sure favors are something that can easily be packed by traveling guests and won’t get confiscated by the TSA during their return trip home.

Be Everlasting if You Can

We are big fans of gifts that stand the test of time and that can be used by guests for a while. As a result, we prefer to stay away from edible favors, but know that many guests do love a little something to nibble on the way home from the reception!

If you are having a holiday themed wedding, try purchasing a house or tree decoration filled with bath salts. Once the bath salts are used, guests can display the favor on the table as a holiday season decoration for years to come. Another popular option is a picture frame favor. Some couples even hire photographers to take photos of guests through the night and develop them in time to hand out to attendees in frames before the festivities are over.

Check Reviews

It’s super easy to search for great wedding favors online, but may be a little more work to do some research to find out if that favor is really as good as it seems. But, it will be so worth it to please your guests.  After identifying what seems to be a crowd-pleasing favor online, take a look at product reviews.

Did it only receive an average of two stars when you thought it would get five? Did guests say that the favor fell apart? Or did the bride say that the favor looked absolutely nothing like the pictures online?

Show that you truly appreciate your guests’ attendance by doing your homework to make sure they will truly enjoy the favor. After all, the last thing you want is to purchase a gift that will fall apart before even leaving the venue. Not only will it appear as you don’t value your guests but it also serves as a poor reflection of your judgment.

So long are the days of the dowry and hello to the days of “showering” the bride (and the groom) with lots of wonderful gifts to fill their first home together. But who comes, who brings gifts and are there any specific must-do’s or please don’ts to take into consideration?

When?

The bridal shower should be scheduled after all of the engagement parties, after the couple registers at their stores of choice. Typically it’s scheduled a month or two in advance of the wedding.

Any time of the day is fine, with the afternoon being the most popular slot – with Sunday’s following as the most popular as well.

Who Does What?

Bridal showers can be hosted by a variety of people, such as a friend, member of the wedding (any gender), and it could be single gender, or co-ed. The Maid of Honor typically hosts this with the help of the other bridesmaids.

The invitations should be bought/made by the host/hosts and be sent out by them as well. But when it comes to the food and decor, it’s okay to ask for help and have everyone in on the fun. A handmade touch will make the entire event more warm and cozy, as well as less stressful for anyone involved. This way everyone can enjoy the event!

Do’s & Don’ts

DO invite all friends, family members and those participating in the actual wedding day.

DO NOT expect your bridesmaids to give gifts at every single one of your festivities as they are already expected to attend all of the events.

DO send the invitations at least two weeks prior to the shower so everyone has enough time to RSVP and buy a gift.

DO NOT invite people that haven’t made the guest list for the wedding. It’s rude to expect those to buy a gift but not join in on the big day.

DO remind the bride to get the these thank you notes written and sent out as soon as possible. The couple will be writing lots of thank you notes once the wedding is over as well and this way the task is over before the final event.

DO NOT invite the same person to more than one shower. If there are multiple, you can’t expect guests to double up on gifts.

DO NOT give in to the “mega bridal shower” trend. Some of these showers involve 60-100 guests and has become quite the faux pas for obvious reasons. Bridal showers are meant to be small and intimate – keep it that way!

Belly Up to the Bar

Christmas

The months leading up to the wedding date include lots of big decisions and checklists to follow. Don’t overwhelm yourself, it’s easier than you think. Just breathe.

Choose a few stores to try on and jump on in. Keep the entourage at a minimal, it’s your opinion that matters most. But don’t overwhelm yourself either. Trying on hundreds of wedding dresses may just muddy the waters more than helping. Figure out what type of silhouette you love and go from there.

Bridal Party Clothing/Attire

Once the dress is ordered, you can work on what your bridesmaids and groomsmen will be wearing. Here too, start with the dress and everything trickles down from there. Keep in mind what your ladies are going to be comfortable with too, don’t choose a style or color that you know won’t be flattering. Your best buds will have a better time – and look better in photos – if they feel confident.

Then, when those bridesmaids’ dresses are chosen, you’ll know what to put all the men in beside them. Black tuxedos, blue suits or maybe even a nice pair a jeans and a blazer is more your speed.

Music

If you want to have a celebration of a lifetime, you’ll have to have music and entertainment that’s on point! It sets the tone for the events but it also gets all of your guests off of their feet and out on the dance floor.

Whether peonies or daisies strike your fancy, flowers are an integral part of the wedding day decor. It’s important that you choose wisely. You want something that inspires your taste but also fits your theme and season.

Thankfully, your planner will work with a florist that can help you create something original that fits your budget as well. The bridal bouquet, the bridesmaids, bouquets, boutonnieres, centerpieces, flowers for the reception and more. This is definitely a piece of the planning you’ll want to spend some time on. Floral design can really transform the space!

The Cake

When it comes to the wedding cake, there are surprisingly lots to consider here too. Do you want a traditional and white, three-tiered beauty or do you want to serve up a tower of donuts instead?

Officiants

This comes easy to alot of couples. Usually, a pastor or someone from their church or childhood can come in and perform the ceremony. Other times a family member or mutual friend can make it happen.

If you don’t have anyone to perform the ceremony, you may want to shop around a bit and do some interviewing. It’s okay to ask questions and chat with people before making the decision. You should feel comfortable with them and feel as those they’d be a good representation of your big day. Choosing an officiant is important and should be treated as such.

Speeches & Toasts

The father of the bride, the father of the groom, the best man and the maid of honor; all of these important people are expected to deliver a toast or a speech at some point throughout the wedding festivities.

And before you say, “No, not me; I’ll set boundaries from the start,” keep in mind that frantic brides won’t always respect such boundaries! An unresponsive wedding planner can make for a very disappointed client, even if the fault wasn’t yours.

If you’re really passionate about being a wedding planner, learn to love the late-night calls and the unscheduled consultations. If you aren’t passionate, you might want to look elsewhere for employment.

As a wedding planner, most days will consist of interacting with clients, the clients’ family and friends, and assorted vendors. In these situations, remember that you were hired by your client, not the vendor, so you must ensure your recommendation suits your client’s needs and fits their budget. Be willing to put your client’s needs above your own, even if that means making a little less commission from vendors. Reputation is everything in this business, and it’s certainly not worth risking your image over a few extra bucks!

As a wedding planner, it’s entirely possible to receive phone calls at 6AM the morning of a wedding from a vendor stating they cannot do what they are contractually obligated to do. People tend to panic when they hear things like this, especially brides, however part of your job as a wedding planner is to remain calm and begin problem-solving immediately. Whatever else, don’t tell the bride unless you absolutely have to. She and her family hired you to handle any situation that arises, not to tell them about every problem and expect a solution. The cake may melt, a dress may not fit, or a vendor might not show up…all of these issues become your issues. And you must address them.

Building relationships with a variety of vendors is imperative, because in addition to expanding your network, you can call one of them at a moment’s notice.

Take some photography, floral and cake design classes as well. It’s essential to be knowledgeable in all aspects of weddings–this helps vendors do their job and ensures client happiness.

Detach Those Preferences

You pretty much have to take your own opinions, likes and dislikes out of the picture when you work as a wedding planner. No matter how many brides you deal with with taste like yours, you’re still going to work for those whose selections make you throw up in your mouth. How Much Do Your Services Cost?

This is of course a big consideration when hiring a band or any other service for your wedding. There’s no point in adding a band to your short list of contenders if their price is outside of your budget. It’s important to be aware of how much money you can allot to your wedding music, so you only consider bands within that budget.

What is Included in That Price?

This is very important. Comparing prices isn’t always like comparing apples to oranges. What one band includes in their price won’t necessarily be reflected in the price another company offers. It’s important to get a clear understanding of what is included in the price. A contract may include a breakdown such as this: three hours of music over a four-hour period, such as three sets of one hour each, with 2 half-hour breaks, or something similar to that. Find out what they do during their breaks (do you need to provide other music? Do they provide recorded music?) You may actually find a higher-priced band offers a better value than one that is less expensive.

Do You Provide Your Own Equipment?

Most bands will provide their own sound equipment, lights, etc. – but don’t assume that’s the case. Always get in writing what services the band provides and those they expect you to provide.

Do You Take Requests?

If you would like to make requests of your band, be sure they are OK with that. Some will be more than happy to accommodate you, while others will have specific set they like to stick to. Ask the band for their repertoire list and be sure there are at minimum about 40 songs on there that you approve of. They’ll need that many songs to get through a three-hour set. Similarly, if there are songs on the list that you would prefer they don’t play, be sure they are willing to be respectful of that. If there’s a particular song you really want at your wedding but it’s not on the band’s song list, you can always ask them if they can learn it. They may be willing to do so, but not necessarily. It’s a big burden on a band to learn a new song, and especially if you are giving them short notice, sometimes learning a new song is not possible. Remember that your event is likely not the only one that they are preparing for, so try not to make unrealistic requests. And bear in mind that if you have very diverse musical tastes, a single band may not be able to accommodate every style. It never hurts to ask, but the country band you are hiring may not be able to accommodate your request to play a Rolling Stones song.

What if a Band Member Gets Sick?

No one wants to believe that this will happen, and it’s very likely that it won’t. However, it’s imperative to have a contingency plan in writing should one of the band members get sick or be otherwise unable to attend the event. You may not be able to prevent these things from happening, but you can have a plan in place. A band worth its salt will have a go-to list of professional musicians they have worked with before and who can effortlessly stand in at the last minute. The “new” band member should fit into the band so seamlessly that the wedding couple should not notice a difference (but they should always be brought up to speed and not deceived).
