Pre-Wedding Name Change
Name change is a big decision, so before your wedding you should take some time to consider what name-change avenue you will be taking and discuss it with your future husband. Once you have decided on a name change you should tell your family and bridesmaids what you intend your married name to be. They will then be able to advise anyone asking monogramming or gift-personalization questions of the correct name. You should also make sure your groom knows to book your honeymoon travel plans and reservations using your maiden name, since you will not have time to change your driver’s license or passport if your honeymoon is immediately after your wedding.
Post-Wedding Name Change
After your big day and honeymoon you should get a few copies of your marriage certificate. You will need to use them as legal proof of your marriage. You will need to get a Social Security card with your new name. Next in the name change process is a new Driver’s License or ID from your state motor vehicle office. Each state has a different process for name change on a driver’s license or ID card.
You should also notify the IRS and USPS of your name change. To do this you will need to complete their respective forms. It is also important to update your U.S. passport with your new name. You can submit a form to the State Department for this new document.
The final phase of the name-change process is notifying all of your creditors of your new name. You can send letters to all of your banks, insurances, and medical providers asking them to update your name on your accounts.
We recommend using name change forms or a name change kit to simplify the process. There are several name change kits available online and on this webpage.
